Summary Numerous research initiatives are underway to address the rising public concern over the frequency and magnitude of public beach closures; associated uncertainties relating to the cause of contaminant problems; and monitoring, reporting and closure practices. These initiatives will be highlighted in this section of BeachCast, to benefit not only the public but to heighten coordination and collaboration among the science and policy communities.
