Summary

More than 200 participants gathered in Chicago Feb. 6-8 for the 2001 Great Lakes Conference to discuss the state of Great Lakes beaches and related monitoring efforts. Mayor Richard Daley spoke on the importance of monitoring beach health. Priorities identified at this U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA)-sponsored event included a need for more efficient technologies for rapid-result monitoring, casting a broader net for communications and education for beachgoers, and developing beach monitoring networks to allow beach management agencies and organizations to share information on volunteer monitoring plans, data results and effective communications strategies.
