Ice on Lake Erie "still has a long way to go" before it melts enough to remove the ice boom. The National Weather Service shows 50 percent of Lake Erie is still covered with ice.

Lake effect snow slows as Lake Erie freezes over

The shallowest of the Great Lakes has been rapidly freezing up over the past week - and ice growth has accelerated rapidly the last two days. Although Lake Erie rarely freezes entirely, said a water expert at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Michigan.
