What's New ATLAS helping map the bottom of Lake Huron The Alpena News (8/26) The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary has just completed a two-week project with the University of Texas at Austin to learn more about the bottom of Lake Huron using new sonar technology. EDITORIAL: Court wrong in township sewage case The Times Herald (8/25) In a puzzling and poorly reasoned opinion, the Michigan Court of Appeals essentially has given its blessing to dumping raw sewage into the place where millions of state residents draw their drinking water. Eight off-shore wind power applications in immediate area Shoreline Beacon (8/24) The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has confirmed that three companies have issued 12 off-shore wind power project applications within Lake Huron. Wolverine Power fights for the right to burn coal The Michigan Messenger (8/19) The Wolverine Power Cooperative is suing the state of Michigan for denying an air permit for a coal-fired power plant the company planned to build in Rogers City. Distant turbines go over better The London Free Press (8/19) Michigan is considering a buffer zone between turbines and the shoreline that’s twice as wide as that proposed by Ontario’s Environment Ministry. Overview Lake Huron is the third largest of the lakes by volume, with 850 cubic miles of water. Lake Huron is hydrologically inseparable from Lake Michigan, joined by the wide Straits of Mackinac. The Huron lakeshore extends 3,827 miles, and is characterized by shallow, sandy beaches and the rocky shores of Georgian Bay. The lake measures 206 miles across and 183 miles north to south, with an average depth of 195 feet (approximately 750 feet, maximum). Lake Huron's drainage area, which covers parts of Michigan and Ontario, is relatively large compared to the other Great Lakes. It's more than twice the size of Huron's approximately 23,000 square miles of surface water. The Saginaw River basin is intensively farmed and contains the Flint and Saginaw-Bay City metropolitan areas. Visualization of Drifting Buoy Deployments on St. Clair River USGS Surface-water quality and flow Modeling Interest Group In October 2000, drifting buoys were deployed to help investigate flow characteristics near public water intakes in 10 reaches of the St. Clair River, a connecting channel of the Great Lakes between Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair.
