What's New Tug removal underway from Duncan Bay Cheboygan Tribune (5/21) The new owner of three derelict vessels abandoned in Duncan Bay nearly three years ago has contracted to dredge a grounded tugboat free from a sandbar. Fishery workshop surveys show more positive attitudes about Lake Huron Great Lakes Echo (5/16) A series of Michigan Sea Grant workshops show growing Lake Huron fish populations and improving attitudes about the Great Lake’s fishery. The April workshops were held in Michigan at Ubly, Oscoda and Cedarville for anglers, boaters and interested community members. MLive (5/7) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that the average level of Lake Michigan-Huron rose 5.16 inches from March to April.
Overview Lake Huron is the third largest of the lakes by volume, with 850 cubic miles of water. Lake Huron is hydrologically inseparable from Lake Michigan, joined by the wide Straits of Mackinac. The Huron lakeshore extends 3,827 miles, and is characterized by shallow, sandy beaches and the rocky shores of Georgian Bay. The lake measures 206 miles across and 183 miles north to south, with an average depth of 195 feet (approximately 750 feet, maximum). Lake Huron's drainage area, which covers parts of Michigan and Ontario, is relatively large compared to the other Great Lakes. It's more than twice the size of Huron's approximately 23,000 square miles of surface water. The Saginaw River basin is intensively farmed and contains the Flint and Saginaw-Bay City metropolitan areas. Visualization of Drifting Buoy Deployments on St. Clair River USGS Surface-water quality and flow Modeling Interest Group In October 2000, drifting buoys were deployed to help investigate flow characteristics near public water intakes in 10 reaches of the St. Clair River, a connecting channel of the Great Lakes between Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair.
