EPA announces Great Lakes Advisory Board (3/14) This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on behalf of 16 federal agencies the membership of the first advisory board to support implementation of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The Great Lakes Advisory Board will provide advice and recommendations to the EPA Administrator, who serves as chair of the federal Interagency Task Force. General Resources Council of Great Lakes Governors Devoted to working cooperatively on public policy issues common to the Great Lakes states. Great Lakes Boating Federation The Great Lakes Boating Federation was created to take advantage of the regional approach to lakefront development and waterway management, and to insure that recreational boaters are being heard when decisions affecting the future of the Great Lakes are being made. Great Lakes Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE) COSEE Great Lakes is adding critical freshwater components to the national COSEE network and enhancing ocean/Great Lakes science literacy in the region and beyond. Great Lakes Commission A binational agency that promotes the orderly, integrated and comprehensive development, use and conservation of the water and related natural resources of the Great Lakes basin and St. Lawrence River. Great Lakes Fishery Commission The GLFC coordinates programs of research on the Great Lakes and recommends measures which will permit the maximum sustained productivity of Great Lakes fish. Great Lakes Protection Fund The Fund seeks projects that lead to tangible improvements in the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem and promote the interdependence of healthy ecological and economic systems. Great Lakes Radio Consortium The Great Lakes Radio Consortium produces environmentally focused radio features and news featured on more than 100 public radio stations around the Great Lakes region and several national radio programs. Great Lakes Regional Collaboration Guided by a U.S. Executive Order, the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration (GLRC) is a wide-ranging, cooperative effort to design and implement a strategy for the restoration, protection and sustainable use of the Great Lakes. A planning strategy document was released in December 2005. Great Lakes Science Center U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) The U.S. Geological Survey's Great Lakes Science Center was founded in 1927 and continues to provide scientific information for the sound management of Great Lakes fish populations and other important natural resources in the basin. Great Lakes Sea Grant Network A network of Sea Grant colleges and programs working in partnership with government and the private sector to meet the changing needs of Americans living in the Great Lakes region. International Association for Great Lakes Research IAGLR is a scientific organization made up of researchers studying the Laurentian Great Lakes and other large lakes of the world, as well as those with an interest in such research. The Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute Established in December 2004, the GLMRI represents a consortium of the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. This first-ever institute dedicated to the study of Great Lakes maritime commerce is pursuing research in marine transportation, logistics, economics, engineering, environmental planning and port management.
Lake Erie Great Lakes Research Consortium The Great Lakes Research Consortium consists of 16 colleges and universities in New York State and nine affiliated schools in Ontario. GLRC programs help to promote collaborative research on the Great Lakes. Lake Erie Binational Public Forum The Forum provides input on the Lake Erie Lakewide Management Plan (LaMP), which aims to restore and protect the beneficial uses of the lake. Lake Erie Center University of Toledo The University of Toledo's Lake Erie Center is an interdisciplinary center dedicated to environmental research. Lake Erie Committee Great Lakes Fishery Commission The committee considers fishery issues of common concern, develops joint programs and research projects and serves as a forum for management agencies. Includes Lake St. Clair, and the St. Clair and Detroit rivers. Lake Erie Lakewide Management Plan U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) The LaMP provides a framework for agencies, organizations and individuals to coordinate activities that they are already working on, and to propose new activities to improve the environmental quality of Lake Erie. Michigan Sea Grant National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) A partnership between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University to promote the understanding and intelligent use of the Great Lakes. New York Sea Grant Focuses the talents of university scientists and extension specialists on research in the areas of fisheries, coastal environmental quality and processes, invasive species, non-point source pollution and seafood safety. Ohio Lake Erie Commission Established in 1990 to help preserve Lake Erie's natural resources, protect the quality of waters and ecosystems, and promote economic development of the region. Ohio Sea Grant College Program Uses research, education, and outreach efforts to enhance use and improve management of this nation's ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes resources. Pennsylvania Sea Grant Established in March 1998, the Great Lakes' newest Sea Grant Program seeks to increase public awareness of coastal issues (environmental and economic) through extension, communication, education, and applied research activities, thereby improving the overall environmental and economic "health" of Pennsylvania's coastal regions.
Georgian Bay Association Representing member associations along Georgian Bay and the inland lakes, the GBA works with water-based communities to ensure the careful stewardship of the greater bay area. Alliance for the Great Lakes Formerly the Lake Michigan Federation, the Alliance is a nonprofit, public interest organization focusing on protecting the Great Lakes through a variety of "Positive Change" projects. Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Focuses on invasive species, aquaculture, fisheries, the future of communities that border southern Lake Michigan, and other issues that affect the coast through K-12 education, research and outreach projects. Lake Michigan Committee Great Lakes Fishery Commission The committee considers fishery issues of common concern, develops joint programs and research projects and serves as a forum for management agencies. Lake Michigan Forum The Lake Michigan Forum was established as part of the Lake Michigan Lakewide Management Plan (LaMP) as the central vehicle for stakeholder participation in developing and implementing the LaMP. Inland Sea Society Works toward maintaining a Lake Superior Basin with a naturally diverse and heathly ecosystem. International Lake Superior Board of Control U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Detroit District This board, established in 1914, sets Lake Superior outflows and oversees the operaton of the various control works. Lake Superior Alliance An international coalition of community groups that are committed to working together toward a cleaner future for Lake Superior. Lake Superior Binational Program U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) The Lake Superior Binational Program focuses on the entire ecosystem of Lake Superior and presents its progress in a series of reports titled the Lake Superior Lakewide Management Plan. Minnesota Lake Superior Beach Monitoring Program Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Minnesota's beach monitoring program collects samples from 37 Lake Superior beaches and analyzes them for water-borne diseases and human health risks. During beach season, this site offers daily and historical beach status information, including weather, photos and maps. Minnesota Sea Grant Provides the people, tools and technology to help maintain and enhance coastal and aquatic economies and resources, focusing primarily on problems facing Lake Superior and Minnesota's inland waters. University of Wisconsin Sea Grant A statewide program of basic and applied research, education and technology transfer dedicated to the wise stewardship and sustainable use of Great lakes and ocean resources.
