Server issue

Steering Committee,

We've made significant progress in getting the RAPIDS server restored. Here
is a summary of the latest information:

All of the repository databases (one for each inventory year) are restored
to their original, pre-crash, form and are now available for accessing. They
should be as they were prior to the server going down. The situation is the
same for thee CAROL database. If you have any trouble connecting to these,
let me know.

The only remaining functionality that is not yet restored is the ArcSDE
portion of the server, which is the component that stores and serves the
mapping components displayed through the CAROL website and through the web
services. We are still exploring if and how we can get this running again.
Given that it will need some re-engineering when the new RAPIDS data design
is implemented, if the effort to restore it is significant, we may decide
the time is more wisely invested in accelerating that re-engineering.
Non-mapping queries through the CAROL website should work, although it has
been observed that they run rather slowly in some cases.

We have a new, more modern server that we've purchased and plan to use to
implement the new RAPIDS system. We are hopeful, though not extremely
confident, that the existing server will remain stable for the next 6-18
months to provide the repository functionality during the change-over to the
new system. Moving as much function to the new system as soon as possible
will be a priority. Since the server was restored, a new set of back-ups has
been run and we will be implementing a more frequent back-up routine to
account for the possibilities of further problems.

Finally, prior to the server crashing there were some modifications to the
repository for the b(a)p assessment that either hadn't yet been uploaded or
had some issues that needed resolving. These should now be able to be made.
I'll be in contact with people on this as needed to get confirmation of what
changes are needed and to seek some assistance in getting them uploaded.

All the best,
Jon
