CSO Public Notice for Indy

Folks:

FYI - Indianapolis has just finalized their Public Notification
process for CSO discharges during wet weather. We see this as a
potential model for other cities in Indiana that will be required to
provide notice to the public when CSOs discharge. Following is
their notice as sent by email late yesterday.

***SEWAGE OVERFLOW WARNING TODAY***

Thank you for signing up to receive e-mail information about sewage
overflows in Indianapolis. When it rains, the 100-year old sewers in the
older parts of the City can overflow, sending untreated rainwater and
sewage into our waterways.

Today, weather conditions indicate a strong possibility that overflows
could occur, or have occurred in the past 72-hours. Please avoid all
contact with water near a combined sewer for the next three (3) days.
Signs are posted along our waterways to identify more than 130 combined
sewers and areas where contact with the water could be hazardous. The
CSO area includes:

- White River downstream from Illinois Street
- Fall Creek downstream from Keystone Avenue
- Eagle Creek downstream from Michigan Street on Little Eagle Creek
- Pogues Run downstream from 21st Street
- Pleasant Run downstream from Kitley Avenue
- State Ditch downstream from Southern Avenue
- Lick Creek downstream from Madison Avenue
- Bean Creek downstream from I-65

The City is implementing many projects to clean our water and reduce
and eliminate sewage overflows. For more information and a map of the
combined sewer area, call the Mayor's Action Center at 327-4622
(327-4MAC). To learn about the steps the City is taking to
substantially reduce sewage overflows, visit the Department of Public
Works website at http://www.indygov.org/dpw/cso.

DPW expects to formally launch both the email list serve and the
telephone hotline shortly. We are continuing to work out some details
with the phone system, but expect it to be operational very soon.
