We have 6 particle counters on-line at the Toledo, Ohio water plant as this
is required by USEPA for surface drinking water plants. They do give an
indication of particle size numbers in particular bin classifications.
Specifically, we are looking at the 4-8 micron range for Crypto and Giardia.
We alter our treatment of the water to reduce the particle numbers in this
range, but the counters can't tell what those particles are.  So, I agree
with your assessment...that this is just a particle counter.
