FYI - For anyone interested in serving on a task force or to offer
suggestions, etc..

     As you know, there have been several accidental drownings along
     Great Lakes beaches and piers in the recent years. Each one is one
     too many. It is our belief that education could have prevented many
     of these drownings. In response to this we have begun to put
     together a Great Lakes Beach and Pier Safety Task Force. The goal of
     this multi-agency, collaborative effort is to fund and produce a
     multifaceted beach and pier safety campaign designed to educate
     Great Lakes area youths on the dangers present during high seas and
     storms. Our last effort, "Pier Safety: A Matter of Life and Death,"
     has made a considerable impact in educating youths on the dangers of
     getting washed off pier structures during storms. It has been used
     in schools and water safety programs since 1996, but it lacks vital
     information about rip currents, which have recently proven to be
     very dangerous along the Great Lakes beaches. There is also a need
     for youth and adults to fully understand how to get out of a rip
     current when caught in its powerful grip while swimming.
     This safety campaign would include: a 20 minute video, three public
     service announcements for broadcast, three ready-to-print billboard
     designs provided on a CD-ROM, a two-and-a-half minute animated movie
     trailer on 35mm for theatrical previews, 5,000(+) posters for
     rest-room and/or beach pavilion areas, and reproducible
     placemat/worksheets and bookmarks for grades 4 - 6. Each shoreline
     community would then receive a packet, distributed by the U.S. Army
     Corps of Engineers, and could order more materials at cost and/or
     reproduce any material at their own expense. There would also be
     publicity efforts to inform inland areas, as well as provide
     material for their water safety programs at cost.
     We would really like to involve the GLIIN audience in this effort to
     help with publicity, serve on the task force or simply to share
     ideas about how to communicate this message. This program is a
     not-for-profit, non-copyrighted safety campaign with one goal in
     mind, to reduce the number of accidental deaths dues to rip-currents
     and high waves along the Great Lakes Shorelines. Much of the footage
     needed for the video has been shot that spans all 5 Great Lakes. We
     are still looking for stories of drownings and near-drowning to
     include in the video in an effort to emphasize the true power these
     of these inland seas. Any suggestions, ideas or contacts are greatly
     appreciated.
