Biological Technician
Lake Michigan Ecological Research Station anticipates an opening for 1-2
aquatic research assistants. The assistant will work with the Biological
Research Division of the U.S. Geological Survey at the research station,
which is located in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, an hour east of
metropolitan Chicago. The national lakeshore contains 180 ft sand dunes,
beaches, bogs, marshes, prairie remnants, and historic buildings. The
assistant will be involved in E. coli monitoring research at several local
beaches and possibly a constructed wetland. Duties include: assisting with
field-work, laboratory analysis using various microbiological equipment,
performing laboratory prep work, and cleaning and sterilizing laboratory
equipment. The assistant must be able to swim, hike various types of
terrain (sand dunes, off-trail forest areas, and uneven terrain) while
carrying equipment, tolerate various conditions (rain, heat, humidity, and
mosquitoes), and must be able to follow instructions relating to sterile
techniques in both the lab and field.
Requirements: obtained or working towards a Bachelors degree in biology,
microbiology, aquatic sciences, ecology, environmental science, or related
field. Experience in lab and field techniques is a plus. Desire:
Reliable, highly motivated person who is well organized and willing to
develop new skills. Has strong interest in aquatic ecology, microbiology,
environmental science, natural resource management, or related discipline.
Is willing to work as part of a team, early hours (possibly arriving at
6:30 am), some weekends, and possible overtime.
Ideally the position will start on May 15 and end, Sept. 15, but these
dates are negotiable. Salary varies with qualifications and appointment
type.
