Attached is a summary of an evaluation of rapid testing methods for beach monitoring by the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) that was funded by the State of California. Four methods were assessed in June of 2004 (flow cytometry, immunomagnetic capture with ATP quantification, quantitative PCR, and advanced chromogenic substrate with dual-wavelength fluorimetry optics). The results from these four methods were compared with analytical results from standard culture based methods using split samples given to 5 California labs. A second round of testing is scheduled for June 2005 (21 - 23). This summary provides the study design.
