The bad water is back in New Baltimore. The city's public bathing beach has been closed to swimming since Sept. 7 because of high E. coli bacteria counts. It happens every year - mostly in late summer, and that's what perplexes environmentalists and officials. This is the fourth straight year high bacteria has shut the New Baltimore beach in late summer. Despite extensive testing and probing, the source has not been found. But Macomb Public Works Commissioner Anthony Marrocco has a new game plan to unravel the mystery. Marrocco was given a $57,000 grant that will be used exclusively to conduct DNA testing on the bacteria to determine if it is from humans or animals. That may narrow the search for the source, he says. The program, called bacteria source tracking, won't start until next year because paperwork required by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has not been completed, said Lynne Seymour, environmental engineer with the public works office.
