RE: Fw: ice sculptures

Hello,

I think the Doozers did it. Doozers are Jim Henson characters in the Fraggle Rock cartoons and children’s books. They are tiny little 6 inch creatures who can’t stop working and creating things, but only work when we can’t see them.

Here are the suggestions we got back on these strange formations.  Bill

Schuster and Vicky believe they are frozen upwellings, seem reasonable to

me too.  Rich and Vicky agree that they are unusual, these things are about

the weirdest things I've ever seen on a beach-resemble stromatoliths,

crynoids or something even alien.

Fascinating!  Looks a bit like stalagmite formation.  I'd suggest that

groundwater may be upwelling at spots on the beach and freezing in layers

as it exudes.

Frozen up-welling near shore springs. Flowing wells can result in very

similar ice formations.

It doesn't seem to appear in any of the  categories we assembled for

LakeSuperiorStreams.org.  See

http://lakesuperiorstreams.org/understanding/ice.html   and its link to

http://www.crrel.usace.army.mil/ierd/ice_guide/iceguide.htm  to the Army

Corps.

If someone turns up more information, would you please let us know so we

can add it to our website.
