Hello- I am gathering information on how other states have
responded to reports of toxic algae in freshwater bodies of water- specifically
if they have developed thresholds based on cell counts or toxin levels for
either closing waterbodies for recreational activities or for actually testing the
water for toxins. The World Health Organization has developed guidance
for toxic algae, but EPA has not. We have used the WHO guidance in the
past. From perusing the web, I have found information on toxic algae on
various state websites and am contacting them directly. But I know that
certain information cannot be found on the web. If you have had
experience with toxic algae and have developed your own guidelines/guidance, I
would love to hear from you. Thanks. Michael Celona, R.S. Center for Environmental Health Massachusetts Dept of Public Health |
