Great Lakes Beach Association Meeting, October 3-5, Traverse City, MI -- Registration and Call for Abstracts now open




The Great Lakes Beach Association will hold its annual meeting October 3-5, 2007, in Traverse City, MI in conjunction with the State of Lake Michigan (SOLM) Conference.  Please see the SOLM website (www.miseagrant.umich.edu/SOLM2007) for the Call for Abstracts, and for registration, lodging, and conference overview.  A detailed agenda for the GLBA conference will be posted in about two weeks, once all speakers are confirmed.  Some highlights of the GLBA meeting include:


On Wednesday, Oct. 3, Great Lakes Beach Association activities will include:

An afternoon workshop on the USEPA-funded Sanitary Survey grants, and the popular Beach 101 course
A poster session (with the SOLM conference) from 5:30-7:30 PM, with hors d'ouvres and cash bar

Several SOLM sessions on Wednesday afternoon may also be of interest to the GLBA membership

On Thursday, Oct. 4, GLBA sessions on:

Sanitary Surveys -- federal, state and local perspectives
Approaches to Monitoring/Beach Criteria Development -- European, Canadian, and World Health Organization approaches, and comparison to recent considerations for the U.S.
Government Perspective, Policy and Initiatives -- presentations from the Government Accounting Office, the USEPA and the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Cities Initiative
Health Risk -- presentations on a California non-point-source edipemiology study, avian influenza, and Cladophora at beaches
Predictive Models -- overviews of recent summaries on predictive modelling approaches and a presentation on physical dynamics at beaches

On Friday, Oct. 5, GLBA sessions on:

QPCR for Enterococci and Beyond -- overviews of how to use this new method, how to set up a lab for this method, and other analyses at beaches using QPCR
Septic Systems, Illicit Connections and Groundwater Influences on Beaches -- case studies from the U. S. and Canada
