Back in 1998, I completed my Ph.D. dissertation entitled "An analysis of fecal coliform as a water quality indicator". Based on monitoring and analysis of existing data sets from Michigan, I concluded that "neither fecal coliform nor E. coli appears to meet all of the basic criteria for a credible water quality indicator." This wasn't a very popular idea almost a decade ago. Times have changed!
