A Postdoctoral position is available in the
environmental microbiology laboratory of Dr. Robin Slawson at Wilfrid Laurier
University. The position is supported by funds from the Ontario Ministry
of the Environment (MOE) to investigate interactions between fecal pollution
and the benthic algae Cladophora on the Great Lakes. Proliferation
of Cladophora over areas of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie and more
locally in Lake Huron, contribute to shore-fouling and largely aesthetic
issues in Ontario. However, recent studies by several researchers
in the USA have indicated an interaction between microbial pollutants and
Cladophora, indicating potentially more than an aesthetic issue.
Research goals of the collaborative project with the MOE are; to investigate
the microbial ecology of bacterial communities associated with the life
cycle of Cladophora through both field and laboratory analysis;
and to detect and characterize associated fecal indicators and bacterial
pathogens. Expertise in both culture-based and molecular-based analysis
is required. Methods will be developed for reliable detection and quantification
of specific bacteria from a variety of samples related to the life cycle
of Cladophora, including phases of active growth and senescence
and beached biomass over stages of decomposition. The Biohazard Level II
research laboratory is located in the new Science Research Centre at Wilfrid
Laurier University, which houses excellent supporting facilities.
Applicants will have a Ph.D. in Microbial
Ecology or Microbiology, possessing a broad range of relevant laboratory
experience including polymerase chain reaction (conventional and real-time),
and selective isolation protocols, and experience in DNA extraction from
a variety of environmental samples. Experience working with Level II pathogens
and various statistical analyses will be an asset. Candidates should demonstrate
strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills. Good organizational
skills and an ability to work independently are also required.
