BEACHNET==> Minnesota HAB workshops, March 4, 5, 6 2008

Attention Minnesota environmental and public health managers:

Worried about blue-green algae blooms? Not sure what conditions are likely to promote algal toxicity? Wondering about the potential human or animal health risks? Wishing you knew where to turn for assistance? Then one of these workshops is for you.

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) may present health risks for humans and animals (pets & livestock) and seem to be more common on our Minnesota lakes in recent years. Learn about algal ecology, research on HABs in Minnesota and the Great Lakes, possible human and animal health risks, and communicating effective messages at a workshop in Sauk Centre, Mankato, or St. Paul.

These three, one-day workshops are intended for local decision-makers who deal with blue-green algal blooms, potential human and animal health risks, and public outreach. Cost is only $15 to cover the cost of food. To register online or for more information, directions, agenda, and details on the webcast, visit: www.seagrant.umn.edu/news

All workshops will run from 10:00 to 3:00, with registration beginning at 9:30. March 4 - Sauk Centre; March 5 - Mankato; March 6 - St. Paul. The St. Paul workshop will also be web cast. On the day of the workshop, visit the MN Pollution Control Agency web site (www.pca.state.mn.us) and follow the links for the webcast.

The workshops are sponsored by Minnesota Sea Grant, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, NOAA Center of Excellence for Great Lakes and Human Health, U of MN Water Resources Center, Minnesota State University Mankato Water Resources Center, and the Minnesota River Board.
