The composition of these benthic algal beds varys from place to place, but are often dominated by Cladophora. According to one researcher at a recent Cladophora workshop at UW-Oshkosh, some beds are
dominated by other species of algae. The algae are also coated with abundant periphyton, especially later in the growing season. The algal beds are usually diverse communities, teaming with invertebrates and providing habitat for small fish. The real problem
is there is just too much of the stuff!
