RE: BEACHNET==> Incredible picture of submerged Cladophora
A few answers from the "Cladophora Capital" were the photo was taken:
- The algae attaches to the rocky shoals scattered along the bottom of Lake
Michigan. It also attaches directly to the zebra and quagga mussels who
also like the shoals and gets a great source of fertilizer.
- A few small forage fish and carp may feed on it, but not in any
appreciable amounts.
- It makes a great hiding cover for Round Gobies who are expanding their
range and increasing in population ( 9.9 Billion estimated in Western Lake
Erie alone during a 2002 Canadian study of the Gobies).
We can only hold our breath for Asian Carp to get into the lake, eat all
the algae, kill all the boaters, and once again completely change the lake
ecosystem before our eyes......
P.S. Do a Google Earth of the northern section of Lake Michigan and you
will quickly see the extent of the Cladophora garden we have growing. Yes
all of that green out in the lake are the rocky shoals with algae. Perhaps
we could harvest this as a bio-fuel base?

What 'grows' on the cladophora? Do fish eat it up? One in particular?

Attached is a photo of NPS divers in 20+ feet of water on the bottom
of
Lake Michigan off Sleeping Bear Dunes showing Cladophora dominating
the bottom.

The occurrence of Cladophora and possible association of pathogenic
bacteria is currently being investigated by several investigators
