BEACHNET==> Job Announcement: Research Hydrologist

Research Hydrologist

NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory

Ann Arbor, MI

NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) in Ann Arbor Michigan seeks an enthusiastic research scientist with experience in watershed modeling to examine physical-biological coupling in Great Lakes ecosystems. The candidate will be expected to use and further develop numerical models of Great Lakes hydrology and couple to other’s works in ecology with particular emphasis on ecosystem forecasting. The incumbent will manage and design projects in lumped-parameter hydrological watershed modeling, simulation, and forecasting in support of daily forecasts of hydrological variables (including lake levels) for all 121 Great Lakes watersheds and seven water surfaces, and daily simulations of climate change and/or management (watershed, lake, channel, and so forth) impacts on hydrology and ecology. He or she also will manage and design projects in distributed-parameter modeling of watershed water quantity and quality in support of ecological forecasting in the watershed and receiving lake, including the movements of water, sediment, nutrients, toxins, heat, and microbes, and in support of other forecasts of beach closings, harmful algal blooms, flooding, and so forth. His or her approach should involve working with others to couple multiple state-variable ecological models with GLERL’s hydrologic models of water quantity, sediment, and water quality. The candidate should have experience in building or working with hydrology models of watershed runoff as well as a facility for working with others in linking models. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with other scientists at GLERL and outside GLERL (e.g., other federal laboratories, universities, private industry), and to build active research programs emphasizing collaborative and inter-disciplinary approaches. It is desirable that the incumbent have a PhD in engineering or geological hydrology, natural resources, or water resources. The individual will be expected to present results in peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations and to submit research proposals to supplement their research programs.

This is a full time permanent Federal position (GS-12) with a starting salary of at least $70,711. Qualifications will be judged in part based on both numbers of peer reviewed publications and a track record for obtaining grants. Closing date is midnight August 26, 2008.

Detailed job information and application instructions can be found at: http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/, reference vacancy number OAR-GLERL-2008-0017 and 0021. Position is open to all U.S. citizens and Federal status applicants. Further information can be obtained from Doran.Maso_n@noaa.gov_. In addition to making a formal application on line, please send a courtesy CV to Dr. Doran Mason either electronically or by mail to Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, 2205 Commonwealth Blvd. Ann Arbor, MI 48105. Further information on NOAA GLERL, can be found at www.glerl.noaa.gov.
