Saving Our Urban Waterways - the Role of Stormwater Management
Roger Bannerman, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
9:00-10:20 am
Henry Center
Friday March 6, 2009
(Available via webcast, see below for details)
Stormwater runoff is the leading cause of water quality impairment in
the United States. In this workshop, Roger Bannerman will discuss the
innovative approaches the state of Wisconsin has taken to identify and
address stormwater problems.
About the Speaker:
Roger Bannerman has worked for the Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources for over 25 years. For most of that time he has directed
research projects investigating the solutions to problems caused by
urban runoff. Some topics addressed by the different studies are: 1) the
quality of urban streams, 2) identification of problem pollutants in
stormwater, 3) toxicity of stormwater pollutants, 4) effectiveness of
different stormwater control practices, 5) sources of stormwater
pollutants, selection of cost-effective control practices, and 6)
benefits of low impact development. He has applied these results to
management plans developed for most urban areas in Wisconsin. This
includes the calibration of the urban runoff model called Source Load
and Management Model (SLAMM). Recently Roger applied the results of his
research projects to the development Wisconsin’s new administrative
rules that regulate stormwater management. Roger’s ongoing research
projects will continue to be used to increase the effectiveness of
Wisconsin’s stormwater management efforts.
This event is part of the Michigan State University Center for Water
Sciences Stormwater Workshop Series
<http://www.cws.msu.edu/stormwater.htm>. The purpose of the workshop
series is to learn about the impacts of stormwater on water resources in
Michigan and to explore potential solutions. If you can't make it in
person, please check out our webcast. Links to the webcast, a complete
schedule, and workshop materials are available at
