Salut, Carol!

Chère Carol,

Since a week or so, when Steve told me about what happened, I have tried
to find the right words for a card I should send to your family and the
Commission (which was also quite a family for you...) Finally, I am not
decided that I should send a card at all since, as I am writing this text,
I almost hear you telling me: "Dont' be foolish ! Dont' send a card; let's
have a beer !" -

It was in Toledo that you and I met for the first time, at a Waterfront
conference. I believe that was in 1986. In late evening, after work was
over, we took a long walk on both sides of the Maumee, and I remember that
we solved quite a few world problems. During those last ten years, we
would meet occasionnally, at Commission's meetings, at conferences around
the Great Lakes, in Québec City: there was action and few problems that
could not find a solution when you were around.

You were researching - off and on - for some info about your roots on
your grand-mother's side: a family with the name "Desalliers", originally
from the Shawinigan area, near Trois-Rivières. Since I had never heard of
such a family name in Québec, I thought that your grandmother had it wrong,
and that in fact she meant : "Decelles", a more common family name in
"Lower Canada". This morning, I used the Web to scan the whole of Québec
for potential "Desalliers": I found 78 families of Desalliers, some from
Shawinigan or living nearby. Your grandmother had it right... -

Tu as vécu
telle chose puisse arriver.

You will stay alive in the hearts of the many friends who knew you well
enough to appreciate just who you were. Repose-toi en paix.
