E-M:/ Kalamazoo Environmental Council - news

The Kalamazoo Environmental Council (KEC) will have a guest speaker,
Dave Batchelor, at our next meeting on Thursday, April 24, 7 pm at the Markin
House in Maple Glen Park on N. Westnedge. Dave is the Market Trading
Specialist, Surface Water Quality, DEQ and will explain to Kalamazoo
environmentalists a proposed water quality trading program for the Kalamazoo
River watershed. For more information, email me, Judy Mayo (birderz@aol.com)
or call at 616-833-9596 until Thursday April 17. After that please call Don
Brown at 616-344-3738. KEC is open to the public and is a coalition of 7
local organizations with environmental interests. We meet the fourth
Thursday of every month.

KEC will also vote on the 24th on a proposed position requesting an
immediate cleanup of one area in the Portage Creek/Allied Paper/Kalamazoo
River Superfund Site called the Bryant Mill Pond. PCB contamination at that
site is very high and continues to erode from sediments into the water.
Other local environmental groups are considering the same issue.

Remember Earth Day, Saturday April 19, at the Kalamazoo Nature Center - a
full day of environmental information and activities. This is also the big
opening celebration for new facilities at the Nature Center - call 381-1574
for more info. KEC is sponsoring a dinner at the close of Earth Day with
guest speaker Lana Pollack, chair of the Michigan Environmental Council.
Dinner will be at Club Car Restaurant at 6:30 and costs $8. If interested
please call me today (or at the very latest, Wednesday) at 616-833-9596.
