E-M:/ Michigan's First Business Recycling Expo

Expo Planned to Assist Businesses with Recycling

The MRC and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) are
teaming
up to host Michigan's first statewide Business Recycling Expo. The event will
take place May 15, 1997 at the Lansing Center in downtown Lansing. The
Business Recycling Expo is a must-attend event for any business owner or
operator striving to make environmental conservation an integral part of
 doing business.

Small to mid-sized business owners and managers often perceive that they do
not have
the resources to integrate waste reduction or recycling initiatives into
their operations.
There are, however, potentially significant cost savings to be gained from
waste
minimization and recycling programs. The Expo will provide tools and
information to
owners and managers wanting to maximize profits by minimizing waste.

Every day more a more businesses establish in-house recycling programs.
 Corporate
buyers are seeking products made with recycled-content material. And, as
apart their
overall commitment, many manufacturers are looking for recycled feedstock to
incorporate into their products.

The Business Recycling Expo will focus on both the business of recycling and
recycling
in business. Topics such as recycling in the commercial and industrial
sectors, understanding the recycling infrastructure, negotiating contracts,
starting a recycling business, and marketing a recycled product will be
addressed in workshop sessions. Case studies of Michigan businesses currently
applying the principles of waste reduction will show participants how waste
minimization and recycling programs can put money back in the budget and
improve employee morale.

The event will also showcase the wide variety of recycled-content products
manufactured in Michigan, and the importance of buying recycled. The MRC
encourages Michigan recycling coordinators to promote the Expo to their local
businesses and encourage attendance. Brochures for the Expo will be mailed to
potential participants by February 15. For more information, contact Kerrin
O'Brien at the MRC office (517) 371-7073.
