E-M:/ nuke power resolution

Enviro-Mich message from mienvcouncil@igc.apc.org (dave dempsey)

Those interested in nuclear energy issues may wish to contact State Rep.
Greg Kaza in support of his resolution, H.R. 40, which urges Congress to
repeal the Price-Anderson Act.

Rep. Kaza, a Republican and enthusiastic supporter of free markets and open
government (he is sponsoring a bill repealing the pollution secrecy law),
calls on Congress to repeal the act as "an unwarranted federal government
interference in the rational market process of risk assessment and resource
allocation [without which] the U.S. nuclear power industry would never have
come into existence, bringing with it excessive electric power prices."

The 40-year-old Price-Anderson Act limits liability for a nuclear accident
to a maximum of $560 million, a fraction of the risk posed by nuclear

Not surprisingly, Kaza's resolution has met a chilly reception from
Consumers Energy, Detroit Edison, and their friends in the Michigan
Legislature. To find out how you can boost the resolution, call Jack in
Kaza's office at 517-373-0615.
