Subject: volunteer opportunity w/ Piping Plover

Hi Alex - Can you forward this to EnviroMich if it has
not already been posted?

Thanks, Charles.

A volunteer opportunity is available that will involve the protection of one of
Michigan's endangered shorebirds, the piping plover. This bird has recieved a
lot of attention over the past decade. In 1986, the piping plover was listed
as endangered on the Federal Register. Historically, the shores of the Great
Lakes were home to close to 800 pairs of these birds. Of this number, only
a few dozen nesting pairs remain. The rapid decline is attributed to factors
including; habitat destruction, nest disruption and predation.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources' State Park Stewardship Program, in
cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is organizing a
Volunteer Piping Plover Patrol to help protect this endangered shorebird
through the education of park guests. This program will place volunteers
in the state parks where the piping plovers are nesting at a time when plover
chicks are the most vulnerable.

Volunteers are need for the following dates: June 28-29, July 4-6 and 12-13,
at the following state parks: Wilderness, Leelanau and Tawas Point. Your
commitment will entail a brief training session and, at least, two, 4 hour
shifts near nesting areas distributing piping plover information and answering

No previous knowledge of the piping plover is necessary. For your time and
effort you will recieve an official Piping Plover Patrol T-shirt and free
camping the night of your volunteer contribution. Grab a friend and make a
weekend out of it. Those interested should contact:
