E-M:/ Detroit Brownfields Tour

Enviro-Mich message from patmec@sojourn.com (Patrick Diehl)

Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DWEJ) and the Michigan
Environmental Council (MEC) are co-hosting a tour of Detroit brownfields as
gubernatorial staff gather at the Detroit Athletic Club for a National
Governors' Association conference hosted by John Engler. The tour departs
at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, from the offices of the Southwest
Detroit Environmental Vision Project, 1450 McKinstry in Detroit.

Abandoned industrial sites are currently being promoted by government and
industry as viable sites for industrial redevelopment, with tremendous
potential for job creation and revitalization of the urban landscape.
Developers promise to create jobs in exchange for massive public
investment. In addition, they are seeking decreased liability for damage
resulting from environmental contamination and relaxed environmental
cleanup requirements.

The "Brownfield Development in Detroit: Good and Bad" tour - organized to
highlight the need for brownfield development plans that take public health
into account - includes visits to four sites: two in southwest Detroit, one
in the Core City Neighborhood area, and one in the New Center area. All of
these sites are located within Detroit's empowerment zone. DWEJ and MEC
are collaborating on this tour to underscore the need for a multi-faceted
approach to development that puts the health of Detroit's children, workers
and residents first.
