The Lansing-based Michigan Environmental Council (MEC) - a
seventeen-year-old nonprofit coalition of 48 local, regional and statewide
environmental and public health organizations - is seeking to fill three
part-time positions:

Administrative Assistant:  Responsibilities include answering phones and
receiving visitors; maintaining office equipment, files and supplies;
processing incoming and outgoing mail; assisting in communicating with MEC
member groups; maintaining various MEC databases; responding to information
requests from MEC member groups and the public; providing computer,
scheduling and other support to MEC staff; and completing special projects
and assignments as needed.  This contractual, 20 hour/week position will be
filled by August 15, 1997.  Pay rate and work schedule are negotiable.

Part Time Communications Specialist:  Responsibilities include writing and
designing reports, briefing memos, correspondence, news releases, op-ed
pieces, newsletter articles, brochures and other documents; assisting in
the development and implementation of communications strategies relating to
MEC programs; fostering coverage of stories and placement of articles,
letters to the editor and other communications pieces; assisting in the
preparation of news conferences, meetings and other events; supporting MEC
staff as needed; and providing communications support to MEC member groups.
Applicants should have exceptionally strong writing skills and be flexible
and reliable.  This approximately 15 hour/week position is funded for one
year and will be filled by September 1, 1997.  Pay rate and work schedule

Contract Policy Specialist:  The successful candidate will have the ability
to advance MEC's goals relating to transportation and air quality issues.
Responsibilities for High Speed Rail piece include conducting research and
developing strategies that include policy, public education and
communications components relating to a high speed rail transportation
system along the Detroit-Chicago corridor; preparing reports, briefing
memos and other documents; assisting in educating government officials,
stakeholders and interested parties to advocate on behalf of high speed
rail; and representing MEC at meetings in and out of Michigan.
Responsibilities for Air Quality piece include assisting in document and
interview research relating to coal-fired power plant emissions and public
health/ecological costs and impacts; collecting, analyzing and verifying
data; working with MEC staff and member groups, the Clean Air Task Force
and others to develop strategies that include policy, litigation, public
education and communications components; preparing reports, briefing memos
and other documents; and representing MEC at meetings in and out of
Michigan.  Applicants should have strong organizational, communications,
research and analytical skills.  This 20-30 hour/week position is funded
for one year and will be filled by August 15, 1997.  Pay rate and work
