E-M:/ Volunteers needed on 8/2 to stencil storm drains in Kalamazoo

Enviro-Mich message from Marc Elliott <melliott@cc.kzoo.edu>

The Forum for Kalamazoo County and the Davis Creek Watershed Project are seeking volunteers to improve the quality of water in Davis Creek, an urban tributary to the Kalamazoo River in the heart of Kalamazoo County. Volunteers will paint stencils on storm drains to raise community awareness of the ways hazardous chemicals enter our waters through drain inlets. Rainwater runoff from streets, yards and driveways picks up many contaminants, such as pet wastes, pesticides, fertilizer and organic debris, before passing directly into the creek via the storm drains located in roadside curbs and parking lots.

The stenciling program is also a fun and easy way for youth to get involved in environmental stewardship and an excellent way for them to make a difference in the quality of the environment. Volunteers will be asked to work for two hours in the morning (from 9:00 to 11:00) or afternoon (from 1:00 to 3:00) on Saturday, August 2 in conjunction with The Forum Community FunFest and river celebration.

Orientation and training for team leaders will be held on July 29 at 5:30 PM and again at 7:30. The session should take less than one hour. For more information on the project or for other volunteer opportunities available at The Forum, please contact Sarah Slack, 616/337-7348. Thanks!
