E-M:/ Calls needed today (Monday) and Tuesday on air standards

Enviro-Mich message from asagady@sojourn.com

Folks from the Natural Resources Defense Council called and
ask me to broadcast an immediate/urgent message to
Michigan environmentalists concerning the effort to support
President Clinton's/Carol Browner's new air quality standards
in the Congress.

Phone calls are needed to Michigan Democratic congressional
members asking that they support the new air quality standards
and sign onto the "Waxman letter" circulating among Democrats.

Similar calls are needed to the Michigan Republicans urging that
they sign onto the "Boehlert Letter" circulating among Republicans.

Folks are trying in the next 24 hours to close out these two letters
that commit their signers to supporting the new air quality standards.

Your call to your member of congress here in Michigan could help
"veto-proof" the new standards in Congress and your immediate
help is needed for this effort.

In particular, these calls are needed to U.S. Reps. Vern Ehlers (R
Grand Rapids), David Bonior (D Mt. Clemens), Debbie Stabenow
(D Lansing), Lynn Rivers (D Ann Arbor) and Dale Kildee (D

Please, please call these members of Congress this afternoon
and tomorrow (Tuesday) and ask them to sign onto these
letters. Your help is needed to counteract the "astroturf"
(phony grassroots) campaign on this issue that has Ehlers'
mail, for example, running against the standards.

Talking points:

...Please sign onto the Waxman (dems) or the Boehlert (repubs) letter.

...Dems should be asked to support President Clinton by signing the
    Waxman letter

...New standards are needed to protect children, people with asthma
and respiratory diseases from damaging health effects...

...The PM standards will reduce deaths from air pollution nationwide by

... Research from the Harvard School of Public Health and others shows that
are needed since the old standards no longer protect public health with
and adequate margin of safety against adverse health effects as the law

... Tell the reps that this is an important sentinel issue and that there is
widespread public support for the new standards in public opinion polls.
