Enviro-Mich message from davemec@sojourn.com (Dave Dempsey)

The Natural Resources Defense Council last week released a report entitled,
"Getting the Dirt on Your Electric Company," rating the 50 largest electric
utility generating companies in the eastern half of the U.S. on 1995
environmental performance. Here's how our two large investor-owned
utilities rank:

* Detroit Edison was fifth worst among the 50 in total nitrogen oxide
emissions (166,212 tons) , twelfth in sulfur dioxide (224,559 tons), and
ninth in carbon dioxide emissions (41 million tons).

* Consumers Energy was 32nd worst in NOx (48,965 tons), 30th in SO2
(96,902), and 31st in carbon dioxide (18 million tons).

Generating fuel mix statistics:

* Detroit Edison:  88% coal;  11% nuclear;  1% gas.
* Consumers Energy:  71% coal;  24% nuclear;  2% hydro;  2% oil;  1% gas.

For more information on the report, check the NRDC website: www.nrdc.org,
beginning Wednesday, August 13.
