Enviro-Mich message from asagady@sojourn.com
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just returned from ten days in Michigan's Upper Peninsula
to find that some messages need reinforcing for
participation on Enviro-Mich concerning copyrights
and off-topic posting.

1. Copyright Material

As Listowner, I again want to stress that posting
copyrighted material is not permitted on Enviro-Mich
unless express prior permission is granted by
the copyright owner.

The only copyright material that is permitted must
contain the following statement at the end:

"This material is republished on the Internet List
Enviro-Mich and on its WWW archive site with
permission of the copyright owner, __________,
and such material shall not be republished or
redistributed elsewhere without the express
permission of the copyright owner."

A copy of a message granting such permission
should be sent to me, the Enviro-Mich Listowner,
before it is sent to the list.

Aside from the legal issues, posting copyrighted
material without permission constitutes
unethical conduct and theft of intellectual property.

It also requires volunteer time to "clean out"
the offending piece from the web site and thus
poses an imposition on volunteers who maintain
this list and web site.

Enviro-Mich participants may just as easily post
a paraphrased summary of the copyrighted
material and a URL pointer to show readers
where the copyrighted material may be found.

2. Off-topic postings

I want to again stress that the purpose of this
list is to distribute information about Michigan
environmental protection, natural resource and conservation
issues, volunteer and citizen organizing on these
topics, and matters of public policy,
public official accountability  and public
decisionmaking on these matters.

Regional Great Lakes issues are explicitly included
in the above subject scope if they will be of Michigan
interest.

Your posting should directly relate to the above
and if it does not, please do not post such material.

Recent postings on various consumer items and private problems
that are not public policy matters
(i.e. the "washing disks" and others) are
OFF-TOPIC as they do not relate to Michigan
environmental protection and conservation issues.

If your reply is not going to be of interest to a substantial
portion of the over 400 people who received these messages,
please do not send it to the entire list.

Requests for information about Michigan
environmental protection, natural resources and
conservation public policy issues are all germaine. Student environmental
activism, academic pursuits and inquiry is explicitly encouraged
on Michigan issues. Michigan/Great Lakes environmental job
openings are germaine and encouraged. Information
on governmental processes, elections, politics and
public notice and participation are all germaine if
they deal with Michigan environmental protection, conservation
and natural resources.

Information of a national nature should have some connection explicitly stated
to Michigan environmental/conservation problems, the Michigan
congressional delegation or Michigan officials, and/or
Michigan-based citizen organizing and/or
organizational activity.

Promotion of environmental meetings/conferences of an
educational and/or public policy nature
at which a fee is charged for
adminition is permitted.

Promotion of commercial products
and services is strictly prohibited.

Your assistance in conforming to these Enviro-Mich usage rules
is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Alex Sagady
