E-M:/ engler orders fish advisory review

Enviro-Mich message from davemec@sojourn.com (Dave Dempsey)

Rebuffed in his effort to make the other seven Great Lakes states the
issue, Governor Engler yesterday ordered a review of Michigan's policy on
providing sport fish consumption advice.

In asking for the review, Engler made a significant concession: his
release said the Department of Community Health would like to distribute
fish advice tables for women of child-bearing age and children and another
for adult males and women beyond child bearing age. This year's single
table does not warn women of child-bearing age to limit consumption of
large Great Lakes salmon; if the health agency's desire is fulfilled, this
policy would be reversed. The Department, he said "would propose to use
the 0.05 HPV (micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day health
protective value for PCB consumption proposed by a uniform regional
protocol) as part of the standard" in the tables for women of child bearing
age and children "if appropriate."

Engler also said for the first time the Department would offer advice for
each of 200 inland lakes.

This is the first time Michigan's own policy has been reviewed under
Engler. He previously ordered MESB to review the uniform protocol used in
large part by most of the other Great Lakes states, then called for another
review of the protocol involving EPA and the FDA earlier this year. EPA
rejected that proposal.
