 North American Environmental Commission Releases Air Pollution Report


 Over 30 scientists from Canada, Mexico and the United States have contributed
 to a report released by the Secretariat of the Commission for Environmental
 Cooperation (CEC) on North American air pollution. The report calls for action
 by the three NAFTA countries to address the health and environmental problems
 posed by what is called "transboundary air pollution." The Commission
 recommends that the governments set targets and timetables for the reduction
 of air pollution in North America, with the report finding that the major
 contributors to continental pollution are electric power plants, trucks,
 agricultural chemicals, incinerators and fossil fuel use by industry. It is
 said that this pollution, particularly mercury and pesticides, can travel
 great distances over the continent once they enter the environment. According
 to the report, global atmospheric levels of mercury have increased
 "two-to-five-fold during the past century", with the main contributors in
 North America being the US and Canada. For more information or a copy of the
