The Senate Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs Committee today
approved, with little discussion, two bills to correct the worst excesses
of Michigan's 1996 polluter secrecy law. The bills, S.B. 706 and 707,
sponsored by Sens. Loren Bennett and Ken DeBeaussaert, now go to the State
Senate floor. The bills result from a petition to EPA filed by MEC and
several member groups challenging the consistency of the law with federal
requirements. EPA insisted on the changes embodied in the two bills.
