E-M:/ Environmental Justice Summit in Detroit

Enviro-Mich message from Michele Marie Mercier <mmercier@umich.edu>

Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DWEJ) will be hosting an
environmental justice summit for Detroiters on Satuday, October 18, 1997.
"Take A Stand for the Land in the 'Hood! A Neighborhood Summit for A
Cleaner, Healthier Detroit" is an action-oriented neighborhood summit
highlighting local victories and ongoing struggles in the areas of Illegal
Dumping, Lead Poisoning Prevention, Air and Water Quality, Land Use and
Blight, and Access to Affordable Quality Food. Case studies from around
the city will be presented, including discussions considering the role of
community organizing, media use, economic opportunities, legal
liabilities, corporate and governmental responsibility, and the
involvement of youth. In an extended work session, participants will
co-create a document of their own strategies and steps to take to address
the threats to where they live, work and play.

The summit will take place at the Wayne County Community College, Eastern
Campus located at 5901 Conner, just south of I-94 at the Conner exit,
beginning with
registration at 8:30 am and ending around 5 pm. For registration
information, please call (313) 821-1064 and provide a fax number where a
brochure can be sent to you. Please note that this summit is focused on
Detroit and Detroit residents and space is limited. A $5 donation is
requested to offset the cost of lunch and materials. All queries should be
directed to DWEJ at (313) 821-1064 (not to the email sender).
