E-M:/ hearing on making the tax code green

Enviro-Mich message from davemec@acd.net (Dave Dempsey)

Rep. Kirk Profit, chair of the House Committee on Tax Policy, has scheduled
a meeting of the recently formed subcommittee to explore the environmental
sensitivity of the Michigan tax code. An earlier meeting was postponed.
The first hearing of the subcommittee is scheduled for Monday, November 3,
at 11 a.m. at the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources in Ann

The subcommittee, Rep. Profit explains, "is designed to be a multi-year
effort" to explore at least three areas of concern:

* What are the most appropriate ways to inject environmental
sensitivity into the Michigan tax code;

* To what extent could taxes on productivity be diminished or
eliminated if there was a shift towards consumption taxes that target
environmentally hostile activity;

* Are there specific activities that individuals and businesses
engage, or would like to engage in, but they are currently inhibited from
doing so because of excessively harsh, negative tax consequences? In this
context, specific ideas will be solicited from Michigan taxpayers so that
proposals can be developed this session for legislative action that will
eliminate existing tax burdens on environmentally responsible activity.

        In addition to Profit, members of the subcommittee are Reps.
Michael Hanley, Paul Wojno, John Freeman, Robert Brackenridge, and Nancy
