Hey, folks -- want to give a gift that keeps on giving?  Then give a
friend/relative/neighbor/elected official etc. a membership in an
environmental organization, particularly one that has regular newsletters
published, or a subscription to publications from non-membership
organizations.  I am sitting here looking at a few of the outstanding
publications put together by organizations throughout Michigan (and sometimes

Sierra Club has one membership that includes national, state Chapter (Mackinac
Chapter in MI) and local group (throughout the state) memberships, and brings
you SIERRA magazine, the MACKINAC newsletter, and in most groups a local
newsletter as well.  $35 per individual membership, $15 for students, and
$43 for joint memberships.  You can request a membership form by email or
check our web page for info, or send your check and name and address of the
gift recipient to Sierra Club, 300 N. Washington Square, Suite 411, Lansing,

Michigan Environmental Council publishes the Michigan Environmental Report 6
times a year.  Subscribe for $25 for individuals, $55 for business.  Make
checks payable to MEC, and mail to MEC at 119 Pere Marquette, Suite 2A,
Lansing, MI  48912 with your name and address.

West Michigan Environmental Action Council, which publishes the WMEAC Action
Issue monthly.  Recent issues included coverage of sand mining and land use
issues.  Membership is $15 for students, $25 regular, $35 family and other
supporting categories above that.  Send your check to WMEAC, 1432 Wealthy SE,
Grand Rapids, MI  49506.  

Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition, regularly publishes the Upper
Peninsula ENVIRONMENT.  Last issue reported on a number of forest management
related issues in the superior peninsula.  Membership is $15 regular, $50
supporting, and $10 for student/senior.  Send your check to UPEC, P.O. Box
847, Marquette, MI  49855.

Lake Superior Alliance publishes Superior Vision, reflecting on environmental
issues affecting the Lake Superior basin.  Last issue focused on mining, a
major threat reasserting itself in the region.  $12 for basic subscription,
$50 for supporter subscription and $200 for patron.  Send your check to Lake
Superior Alliance, Superior Vision, P.O. Box  472, Spooner, WI  54801.

East Michigan Environmental Action Coalition, a membership organization in
southeastern Michigan, publishes a newsletter, Target Earth. Memberships are
$20 for regular, $10 student, and other rates for supporting.  Subscribe by
sending a check to 21220 W. 14 Mile Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI  48301-4000.

The Ecology Center in Ann Arbor puts out Ecology Reports five times a year.
Memberships are $30 for regular, $15 for low-income, and other supporting
levels.  Send a check made out to the Ecology Center to 117 N. Division
Street, Ann Arbor, MI  48104.

The Lone Tree Council puts out a feisty publication, The Leaf-let -- contact
them at < terbar@cris.com > for details on membership rates.  

Michigan Land Use Institute publishes the Great Lakes Bulletin quarterly, and
membership is $25 per year.  Send a check to MLUI, P.O. Box 228, 845 Michigan
Avenue, Benzonia, MI  49616.

Public Interest Research Group in Michigan (PIRGIM) publishes the PIRGIM
Citizen Advocate.  For details contact them at 122 South Main Street, Suite
370, Ann Arbor, MI  48104.  

Urban Options, an East Lansing based organization dedicated to improving the
quality of the urban environment publishes the SUNDIAL.  $25 memberships
should be sent to Urban Options at 405 Grove Street, East Lansing, MI  48823.

The Nature Conservancy  Michigan Chapter provides a nice newsletter
regarding projects in state, and memberships brings you the national
magazine as well.  Basic memberships start at $25, $35, and $50 -- contact TNC
