JOB NOTICE:  ENVIRONMENTAL OUTREACH SPECIALIST

Technical Outreach Services for Communities (TOSC) Program
Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic Center for Hazardous Substance Research
Michigan State University

This is a part-time (0.5 FTE) professional position in the Technical
Outreach Services for Communities (TOSC) program funded by the Great Lakes
and Mid-Atlantic Center for Hazardous Substance Research.  The TOSC program
provides technical assistance to communities affected by hazardous waste
contamination in an eleven-state region (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan,
Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Delaware,
and Maryland) and the District of Columbia. 

The Specialist will participate in an interdisciplinary team involving
faculty, staff and students with expertise in environmental engineering,
public health, risk assessment, hazardous waste management and legislation,
and community involvement.  Duties will include interaction with community
members, state and federal regulators, and university faculty and students.
  BS degree in environmental, civil or chemical engineering (or related
engineering field), environmental science,
public health or public policy is required.  Abilities to understand and
communicate complex environmental issues related to the remediation of
hazardous waste sites are required.  Experience in management of the
Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) process under the
Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act
(CERCLA or "Superfund") and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization
Act (SARA) and community rights under the Emergency Planning and Community
Right-to-know Act (EPCRA) is required.  Excellent writing and public
speaking skills and proven ability to work with community groups are also
required. 

Employment site: Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,
Michigan State University. Extensive travel may be required.  Position
available immediately.  Competitive salary depends on qualifications;
