David Hamilton of Haslett has been named chief of the Department
of Environmental Quality's Surface Water Quality Division.

The appointment was made by DEQ Director Russell Harding.

Hamilton, who has devoted 20 years to environmental protection in
Michigan, currently serves as chief of the Water
Management Section in the DEQ's Land and Water Management
Division. His new duties begin Jan. 5.

"Dave is filling a critical position within the DEQ management team,"
Harding said. "The people of Michigan prize their lakes and
streams. Protecting and improving our waters are a key focus of
this agency. Dave's leadership will be instrumental in helping us
reach those goals.

"We were fortunate to have a strong field of candidates from which
to choose. All applicants had a lot to offer, but Dave's
vision and experience set him apart. I'm pleased that he accepted
this new challenge and look forward to working closely with
him."

Hamilton earned degrees from Michigan State University and
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He entered state
service in 1978 as a hydrologic engineer with the Department of
Natural Resources.

His honors include the Land and Water Management Division's
Outstanding Employee Award, earning the designation of
Student Engineer of the Year by the Michigan Section of the
American Society of Agricultural Engineers, and being named to
several honor societies.

He also is a member of the American Geophysical Union, Michigan
Chapter of the American Water Resources Association,
and the Association of State Dam Safety Officials.

Hamilton is active in the community as well. He is involved with local
school district Parent Teacher Organizations and is a
representative on the Haslett Coordinating Council. He also is involved
in local church, charitable and educational organizations.

Hamilton replaces Robert Miller of Williamston who retired earlier this year.
