E-M:/ out-of-state waste bill scheduled for hearing, possible vote

Enviro-Mich message from davemec@voyager.net (dave dempsey)

The House Conservation, Environment and Recreation Committee is scheduled
to take up S.B. 4, which would bar imports of garbage from states and
countries that have lesser solid waste standards, on January 28 at 10:30
a.m., Room 425-426 Capitol. The state DEQ has confirmed its opposition to
the bill. The solid waste industry is also launching a full-court press in
opposition. Citizens concerned about unsafe out-of-state waste must
communicate with committee members now.

The Committee is also scheduled to take up a bill sponsored by Rep. Tom
Alley, committee chair, to create a permit review board in the DEQ.

The full House yesterday approved without dissent H.B. 4558, which would
require DEQ to issue an annual environmental report using objective data on
the quality of air, water and other natural resources. The bill is
sponsored by Rep. Liz Brater.
