Re: E-M:/ Channel 7 coverage of Engler $90 million throwaway

Enviro-Mich message from Scott Heinzman <sheinzman@prodigy.net>

In response to the channel 7 Nordhouse case. Saw it on the 6pm report.
There will be a follow up report tomorrow, Wed, at 11pm.

The segment covered the takings history in Michigan. They filmed from
Minden bog and interviewed a fellow who'd been picking huckleberries
from there for over 60 years. They detailed how Michigan Peat wants to
extract peat and essentially ruin the bogs ability to act as a "sponge"
and protect thumb residents from flooding.

It was reasonably scathing when an environmentalist was interviewed and
he condemned the state for not even fighting Michigan Peat's takings
suit. The report detailed how the Engler administration set a bad
precedent by paying the Miller Bros. $90 million in the Nordhouse
settlement. It went on to say the property was worth about $5 million.
One of the Miller's was interviewed briefly defending the right of
property owners to receive compensation when regulations prevent

Anna Holden of the Sierra Club was on camera outlining how disasterous
takings cases are to the environment. The Supreme Court case involving
K&K Construction was brought up. The conclusion of the story being
developers are lined up waiting to tap the state coffers depending on
how the K&K case shakes out.

Back to the studio... the reporter wrapped it up by saying they'd been
inundated with calls from Engler and Co. claiming the problem was
inherited from the Blanchard administration and they actually saved
Michigan taxpayers millions of dollars with their actions.

Tune in tomorrow at 11pm. Should be interesting.
