E-M:/ MACKINAC hits Engler's Outdoor Agenda

Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

The Mackinac Chapter of the Sierra Club's newest newsletter (spring MACKINAC)
has an overview of Governor Engler's seven year record on the great outdoors.
Among lowlights:

- reducing protection of Lake Superior from toxic pollution
- pushing for extension of U.S. 23 despite enormous ecological costs
- repeated efforts to raid the Natural Resources Trust Fund to pay for pet
- undermining efforts to secure a natural heritage license plate, instead
seeking to divert funds to undefined activities in the DEQ
- failure to abide by the law in updating the state's Endangered Species list
- opposition to accurate fish advisories
- undermining Michigan's environmental protection efforts by secretly
negotiating the Nordhouse Dunes settlement, and costing taxpayers $90 million
at the same time
- lack of water pollution enforcement, resulting in a worse record on
compliance with federal water quality standards now than five years ago.

The MACKINAC will review other aspects of the Governor's record in future
