TWO $1,000 AWARDS FOR BEST ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING IN MICHIGAN

Nominations are being accepted for the 21st annual Ben East Prize
competition to recognize excellence in natural resources reporting and
conservation journalism in Michigan. The awards are given for outstanding
reporting in 1997 on conservation, environmental protection and outdoor
recreation in Michigan.
Staff and freelance reporters for daily and weekly newspapers,
magazines, radio and television stations are eligible for this competition.
Entries should deal with a single subject or issue involving Michigan
natural resources. The most important criterion in the judging will be:
What change or changes resulted from the reporter's efforts?
Michigan United Conservation Clubs, the sponsor of the awards,
will give two $1,000 awards in both print and broadcast categories. The
deadline for nominations is March 15, 1998.
The 1997 broadcast winner was Gretchen Millich, state Capitol
reporter for WKAR radio in East Lansing, for a television documentary on
the impact of splitting the Michigan Department of Natural Resources into
two agencies. The program aired on Michigan Public Television stations as
part of the "Michigan at Risk" series.
The 1997 print winner was Richard P. Smith of Marquette for
reporting on issues raised by an unsuccessful ballot proposal to outlaw the
use of dogs and bait by Michigan bear hunters. His articles appeared in the
Marquette Mining Journal, Michigan Out-of-Doors Magazine and other
publications.
Nomination forms can be obtained from Dennis Knickerbocker, editor
of Michigan Out-of-Doors Magazine, by calling him at 517-371-1041 or
writing to MUCC, P.O. Box 30235, Lansing, Michigan 48909.
