In releasing the 1988-99 Children's Agenda at a State House Committee
today, the Michigan Coalition for Children and Families called for several
recommendations to strengthen environmental policies to protect children's
health.
Produced by a coalition of more than 60 member groups, the Agenda
contains recommendations on education, health, juvenile justice, social
support and communities issues.
MCCF urges state lawmakers to revise Department of Environmental
Quality pollution standards to assure protection of children from toxic
substances and to launch an all-out effort to prevent and treat
lead-poisoned children as part of the Agenda.
The Agenda also calls on the Department of Community Health to do a
better job of getting new, more protective warnings about eating
contaminated sportfish to women of child-bearing age, especially low-income
and minority populations.
This is the second time the Agenda has included environmental
recommendations along with dozens of other suggestions to support children
in Michigan through state policy reforms. MEC is a member of MCCF. The
Agenda has been published for more than 15 years as a way of concentrating
the attention of state government on the needs of children.
"Environmental pollutants pose a real risk to the children of this
state," said Alana Aronin, chairperson of MCCF. "Healthy children require
protection from toxic substances and the state needs to do a better job of
assuring this is done."
The 1998-99 Children's Agenda also calls for enactment by the
Legislature of a children's protection impact statement for all major
legislative and funding proposals, improvements in day care quality and
access, better monitoring of the impact of welfare reform and more support
for families, and attention to court reforms that affect children and
juveniles.
For copies of the Agenda, contact MCCF at P.O. Box 11073, Lansing,
MI, 48901, or download an order from from the MCCF website at:
