MICHIGAN SEA GRANT EXTENSION EXOTIC SPECIES DAY CAMP
A One-Day Teacher Training Experience

When:  Thursday, June 24, 1998
Where:  Belle Isle Zoo/Aquarium, Detroit

 Increase your knowledge of aquatic exotic species, such as zebra mussels,
sea lamprey and purple loosestrife.
 Help your students become environmental stewards and achieve state
learning standards.
 Learn about and develop classroom-ready resources for grades 4-8. 
 Receive honoraria and free instructional materials.
 Get hands-on experience using Sea Grant educational products, including:
	- Youth education resource kits
	- CD-ROMs
	- Internet resources
	- Lake monitoring kits
	- Instructor's training packages

EXOTIC SPECIES DAY CAMP

The Exotic Species Day Camp is an exciting introduction for classroom and
nonformal Educators to harmful aquatic exotic species.  On June 24, 1998, a
one-day workshop, or 'day camp', for Michigan teachers will be conducted.
         
Our Great Lakes and inland waters are valuable resources that need to be
understood and protected. Unfortunately, harmful exotics are out-competing
native plants and animals and affecting ecosystem health. To protect our
aquatic environment and economy, we need an educated public, especially
youth who are our future environmental stewards. Exotic species are an
important curriculum topic for teachers as a useful point of exploration for
understanding aquatic ecology and the role of human impacts.
         
Teachers and educators participating in this workshop will be introduced to
new resources to teach students about how exotic species relate to issues of
water and sediment pollution, food webs, threatened and endangered species,
global climate change, and water-related economic impacts.

GOALS
         
Broaden distribution of exotic aquatic species education to teachers,
students, environmental educators, and outdoor education center visitors in
Michigan.

Introduce Sea Grant and its regional nonformal education partners as key
resources for learning about Great Lakes issues.

PARTICIPANT BENEFITS

- Gain hands-on experience in applying exotic species concepts.
- Increase knowledge of aquatic nuisance species (ANS), both animals and plants.
- Develop new multidisciplinary teaching skills to help students become
environmental stewards.
- Work with quality interactive education products that allow teachers to
meet state learning standards.
- Obtain free instructional materials.
- Receive an Honorarium for assistance in developing new exotic aquatic
species classroom activities.
- Network with other educators from throughout Michigan.
- Use a new exotic species compendium for the classroom and outdoor education.
- Visit premier environmental learning centers (museums and aquariums).
         
PARTICIPANT COMMITMENTS
         
- Develop an activity incorporating one or more Sea Grant education products
featured at the Exotic Species Day Camp.
- Share Sea Grant education and information resources with other teachers
and outdoor educators through in-service training, demonstrations, or
presentations at educational forums.

SEA GRANT EDUCATION PRODUCTS REVIEWED DURING THE EXOTIC SPECIES DAY  CAMP

Exotic Aquatics Traveling Trunk
Interactive education kit including a curriculum with nine classroom
activities, an award-winning video, maps, books, and  museum-quality
specimens and models of several exotics.
         
Zebra Mussel Mania Traveling Trunk
Award-winning education kit and curriculum that offers ten activities
incorporating experiments, games, stories, and community action projects
about zebra mussels and other aquatic exotics.
         
Great Lakes Solution Seeker CD-ROM
Data sets related to exotic species have active links to Internet sites that
keep the data up-to-date. Students access images of the species, track their
spread, and compare means of introduction and control.
         
SGNIS (Sea Grant Nonindigenous Species)
Peer-reviewed website and CD-ROM contains research information and outreach
products on exotic species. Graphics, photos, and video clips of many
species can be downloaded.

GLIMCES (Great Lakes Instructional Materials for the Changing Earth System)
Activities address global environmental change with a section on exotic
species and a scenario of how they are likely to be influenced by global
warming in the Great Lakes ecoregion.
         
Zebra Mussel Citizen Monitoring Kit
Kit used to collect seasonal monitoring samples and data from inland lakes.
This equipment can be used by educators during field work such as water
quality and habitat assessment. Hands-on field work by students will
contribute to regional and national data collection.
         
The Purple Loosestrife Project
Includes activity sets for grades 4-12, background materials, and a website
called "The Purple Pages." From this project, teachers have created
classroom activities, such as rearing purple loosestrife and  its
natural enemy, the leaf-feeding Galerucella beetle.

Mussel Menace: Zebra Mussels and You
Instructor's training package teaches people how to raise zebra mussel
awareness aimed at preventing spread and reducing impacts.  Includes
video/slide program, fact sheets, newsletters, contacts, and more.
