TO ENVIRO-MICH subscribers: Proposed changes to MI Endangered Species list

The Michigan Endangered Species Act requires that the list of endangered,
threatened and special concern species be updated every two year through the
rule making process. The last update occured in 1991. Announcements are on
the DNR Calenda for the first meetings in the step of updating the lists
(copied below). The lists themselves are findable on the DNR web page at:
www.dnr.state.mi.us/wildlife/Heritage/T&E/Proposed_T&E.htm

One note for those looking at the lists is that the agency is proposing
removing some extirpated species that are still in existence. Also,
background materials as to the rationales for changes have not been provided
for this list yet, nor is it entirely clear if the lists are identical to
those that have been prepared by the advisory committees that proposed changes
to the DNR. Sierra Club is seeking to assure that all this information is
available to allow the public an opportunity for more informed response to the
hearings and new proposed list.
