Please publicize extensively:

On Saturday, April 4 the MSU chapter of Amnesty International will be
holding the first
annual Michigan Area Meeting, from 1:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. in the C-wing of
Wells Hall.  Participants will have the opportunity to attend 2 different
hour-long workshops, a round table discussion on the lessons of human
rights activism, and a presentation on the current situation in Chiapas,
Mexico by Father Peter Dougherty, a Michigan Peace Team activist who
recently practiced unarmed protective accompaniment there.

The workshops to choose from include:

1. Yves Banda-Nyangu, a refugee from the former Zaire and the former vice
president cellulaire of the UDPS party, will be speaking about the current
situation in the Congo.
2. Michael Rip, a PhD who has addressed the UN in favor of a land mines ban
and who has been involved with land mines activism since the mid-1980's,
will speak about what we can do in the wake of the global ban on land mines.
3. Erick Williams, a member of the Lansing Peace Education Center who also
serves on the Lansing Area Draft Board, will speak on US policies in
regards to the military draft.
4. Andy Schuchart, the legislative project coordinator for Amnesty USA's
Midwest region, will be speaking on Amnesty's effect on US legislation, and
he'll specifically be speaking on the Convention to Eliminate All forms of
Discrimination Against Women and the Code of Conduct on Arms Transfers.

If you are interested in attending one or two of the workshops, but not the
whole conference, that is fine.  Please RSVP so we can reserve a spot for
you.  The workshops are at 1:30 and 2:45, and registration is at 1:00.  If
you are interested in attending Peter Dougherty's presentation on Chiapas
but not the rest of the conference, that will be occurring at 7:00 in B-106
Wells Hall.
