E-M:/ lead contamination legislation

Enviro-Mich message from davemec@voyager.net (dave dempsey)

The State House Health Policy Committee held a hearing this week on H.B.
5656, which would authorize the state's first comprehensive attack on
environmental lead poisoning of kids. No vote was taken and the bill will
probably get a hearing soon after the end of the Legislature's Easter
break. A similar bill will probably get a hearing in the Senate at the
same time.

Action on any legislation to license and certify lead abatement contractors
is needed by June 1 in order to avoid the cutoff of federal lead abatement
funds. Some 35 states have enacted such legislation but Michigan has
balked at doing so since 1995.

There are 50,000 lead poisoned kids in Michigan. Groups interested in
supporting H.B. 5561 should address letters to: Honorable Gloria
Schermesser, State Representative, P.O. Box 30014, Lansing, MI, 48909.
Contact her office for details on the legislation and future hearings.
